As at 14 July 2008

The aim of this study is to understand how individuals engage in knowledge sharing through online social networking and how this might inform formal online learning programs. In order to investigate this topic, the following questions will be addressed:

•    What are the key features of online social networking sites?

•    How do individuals share knowledge in online social networking sites?

•    How does knowledge sharing in online social networks contribute to learning?

Refined as per Radha's comments 29 June 2008:

The aim of this study is to understand how individuals engage in online social networking sites and how such engagements might be capitalised upon to inform the design of formal online learning.

In order to investigate this topic, the following questions will be addressed:

1)    What are the key features of online social networking sites?

2)    How are individuals engaged in online social networking sites?

3)    What elements of online social networking promote sustained engagement in such activities?

Hi Carol
I am not sure whether you have added your proposal, cannot find any attachments. please excuse my ignorance here , if I am wrong as I have tried some of the links on your page.
Anyway, i will just comment on your above mentioned aim and questions. i think the topic is great as so much in need of research. my concern: do you need the word motivation in the aim? Try: the aim of this study is to investigate and apply effective practices of social online networking to formal online learning.
Key features of online social networking : could this also add social, cultural practices and contexts?
Question two: my concern: how will you measure motivation? Maybe drop it unless you are going to conduct a psychological study.
The third question is fine. You could have a key question around learning as it seems to be the central aim of the study.
Okay, I will add this comment. I will come back to your page later to see whether you have accessed it . the concept map is good, but again it has so much - not needed in terms of theories- constructivist theory and social network theory as applicable to learning perhaps should be enough- however, we can come back to this later.

Thanks Radha - yes I think the motivation needs to go. Steve questioned it at works in progress & I've been questioning it since.

On key features - I think there are 2 levels - 1) the actual software features eg 'friending' sharing links etc 2) the social, cultural practices & contexts that you have raised. I'll keep this in mind for that section.

As I read more, I'm starting to think that this is about how social networking can be incorporated INTO formal online learning - more thinking needed on this point.

Concept map is a brain dump & changes regularly as I weed unnecessary concepts out. I like to put them there as they arise in reading & thinking & then work out if they belong. I'm still not sure if it is constructivism & social networking.

I'll let these sit as I work on the Lit Review & reshape them after our Winter School week.
